Ras Al Khaimah has been growing along its coastline, and coastal development places a particular set of demands on concrete structures. A properly executed post-tensioned slab is held in compression, which keeps cracks closed. Closed cracks admit far less moisture and chloride than open ones, and in a marine environment the rate at which chlorides reach the reinforcement is the single largest factor in how long the structure lasts. Post-tensioning done well is therefore a genuine durability advantage here. Post-tensioning done badly, with voids left in the ducts, is the opposite, because it places high-tensile steel in a sealed cavity in the most corrosive environment available. That is not an argument against post-tensioning on the coast. It is an argument for taking the grouting stage extremely seriously.
