Stressing is the moment a slab full of loose steel becomes a post-tensioned structure. It is also the moment the design gets tested against reality, because the tendon either extends the calculated distance under the calculated force or it does not, and if it does not, something is wrong that needs finding before the next floor goes up.

Where Has Premium Post Tension Carried Out Stressing Operations?

Our stressing work has been concentrated in Ajman, on buildings where we also handled the design, the materials and the installation. That matters more on this service than on any other, because stressing is where problems introduced earlier finally surface.

In Al Yasmeen, in the Eastern Sector, we stressed two adjacent G+M+4+R residential buildings. In Al Jurf, in the Northern Sector, a G+4+R residential building and an 11-level structure built as G+2P+8T+R with two parking floors. On a building of that height, stressing is not one operation but a repeated one, floor after floor, and consistency between floors is the whole point.

Which Stressing Operations Have We Recently Completed?

Two residential buildings, Al Yasmeen

Roughly 4,200 and 4,300 square metres of post-tensioned slab, both G+M+4+R. Similar buildings, stressed by the same crew, which meant the elongation figures from the first building became a useful sanity check for the second.

An 11-level structure with parking, Al Jurf

About 9,340 square metres, G+2P+8T+R. Eleven levels means repeated stressing operations against changing tendon layouts, because the parking floors and the residential floors are not the same slab. The stressing record for that building is a sequence, and it had to stay coherent across all of it.

A G+4+R residential building, Al Jurf

Roughly 3,570 square metres, a more straightforward stressing sequence.

220mm to 280mm slabs, 55 to 80 kg/m³

Across these buildings the slabs ran 220mm to 280mm thick with steel ratios between 55 and 80 kg per cubic metre, so the jacking forces and expected elongations differed building to building. Nothing here was stressed to a standard figure, because there is no such thing.

What Determines Whether a Stressing Operation Is Done Correctly?

Five checks, and the last one is the real evidence.

Concrete strength before stressing

Tendons are stressed only after the concrete has reached the strength the design specifies, confirmed by cube results rather than by the calendar. Stressing early is genuinely dangerous: the anchorage zone is carrying enormous local force, and concrete that has not gained strength can crush behind the anchor.

Jacking force and the stressing sequence

Tendons are stressed in a designed order, not an arbitrary one. Stressing the slab unevenly loads it unevenly, which can crack a slab that would have been fine had the sequence been followed.

Elongation measurement, and why it is the real check

This is the heart of the service. The design calculates how far each tendon should extend under the specified force. We measure how far it actually extended. If measured elongation matches the calculation within tolerance, the force genuinely reached the tendon along its whole length. If it falls short, something is obstructing the tendon in the duct. If it overshoots, the tendon may be slipping or the duct profile may differ from the drawing.

Wedge seating and lock-off

When the jack releases, the wedges bite and hold the strand. A small, predictable loss occurs at that moment, and it is accounted for in the design. A wedge that seats badly loses more than that, which is why lock-off gets checked rather than assumed.

Records made at the time

Gauge pressures, measured elongations, calculated elongations, deviation, date, tendon reference. Written as the work happens. A stressing record assembled later is not a record.

Stressing process

What Happens on Site on Stressing Day?

Nine steps, and a deviation at any one of them stops the operation until it is understood.

Step 01

Confirm concrete strength

Cube results are checked against the specified stressing strength. No result, no stressing.

Step 02

Calibration check on the equipment

Jack and gauge calibration is verified, because an uncalibrated gauge produces confident readings that mean nothing.

Step 03

Prepare the anchorage

Strand tails are cleaned, anchor faces checked, wedges inspected before seating.

Step 04

Stress to the designed sequence

Tendons are jacked in the specified order and to the specified force, not to whatever the crew reaches first.

Step 05

Measure and record elongation per tendon

Each measured figure is written against its calculated figure, with the deviation noted immediately.

Step 06

Investigate anything outside tolerance

A deviation is not a paperwork problem to be smoothed over. It is information about the tendon, and it gets resolved before the operation continues.

Step 07

Lock off and check seating

Wedge seating is verified rather than assumed.

Step 08

Trim and prepare for grouting

Excess strand is cut back and the anchorage prepared, because grouting follows and the anchorage has to be sealable.

Step 09

Issue the stressing report

Compiled and handed to the consultant for release of the next pour.

Why Do Consultants Trust Our Stressing Records?

Because the records are produced during the operation rather than assembled to satisfy a request. A consultant reviewing a stressing report is really asking one question: did the force actually reach the steel along the full length of every tendon? A report that gives measured elongation against calculated elongation, tendon by tendon, answers that question directly. A report that gives only final gauge pressures does not.

The second reason is that we usually installed the tendons we are stressing. When a reading comes back outside tolerance, the useful next question is what happened during installation at that location, and we can answer it rather than open an investigation between two companies.
